It’s Not About You”: The Transformative Power of Local Leadership and Community Impact

In the heart of Woodford County, Kentucky, I recently had the honor of graduating from the Woodford County Chamber of Commerce Leadership Program. As a newcomer, I anticipated a long journey to truly feel integrated into the community. However, this program accelerated that process, immersing me in the county’s rich tapestry of civic life, from its horse farms and bourbon distilleries to its emergency services and local governance.

This experience echoed the principles found in Bob Burg and John David Mann’s book, It’s Not About You: A Little Story About What Matters Most in Business. The narrative follows Ben, a young executive tasked with facilitating a merger. Through his journey, Ben learns that true leadership isn’t about asserting control but about serving others, building people up, and sharing the mantle of leadership. This philosophy resonated deeply with my experiences in Woodford County, where collaboration and community engagement were paramount.  I strongly engage any conscious entrepreneur to read It’s Not About You.

Reflecting on my past endeavors, I recall the work done in Harmony, Pennsylvania, particularly with The Center of Harmony. This historic opera house was transformed into a vibrant community hub, fostering collaboration among local businesses and serving as a venue for events that enriched the town’s cultural fabric. The success of this initiative was rooted in the same principle: focusing on the community’s needs rather than personal gain.(Center of Harmony LLC)

That impact of that project, I sold the business a few years ago, can still be felt in the region.  During that time, I helped launch over 3 dozen small businesses.  Over 90% of those businesses were women-owned.  The building and renovations alone brought in almost $700,000 of investment into the community.  The more impressive outcome was the number of employees, toursists, and community residents that benefited from and ejoyed all that was offered theree.

Engaging in local leadership and community projects offers profound mental and emotional benefits. It fosters a sense of belonging, purpose, and fulfillment. By contributing to the well-being of others, we not only uplift our communities but also experience personal growth and satisfaction.

Why Local Leadership Matters

Engaging in community projects has ripple effects:

  • Connection: Builds deep, meaningful relationships

  • Purpose: Grounds you in something bigger than yourself

  • Well-being: Improves mental and emotional health

  • Growth: Teaches adaptability, empathy, and communication

Local Leadership isn’t about accolades. It’s about being a bridge—between people, ideas, and futures.
